Atom (formerly Squadhelp) review & alternatives
By Domain Yoga · Last updated July 27, 2026
Atom — the company formerly known as Squadhelp, rebranded April 17, 2024 — is three products wearing one brand. There are crowdsourced naming contests at four published tiers ($299 to $1,499), a curated marketplace of 400,000+ brandable domains priced from roughly four figures into seven, and validation services like audience testing with real human respondents from $99. It’s built for founders who want human creativity and human-vetted inventory rather than raw machine output, and its reviews land mixed-positive — roughly 4 to 4.5 out of 5 stars across aggregators as of mid-2026. An alternative is the better call when the job is different: near-free ideation (a free or per-search AI generator), a name-plus-logo bundle (99designs), a single freelancer (Fiverr), or a differently curated marketplace (BrandBucket, Brandpa).
What is Atom, and what happened to Squadhelp?
Squadhelp was founded in 2011 by Darpan Munjal — still founder and CEO — and grew into the most fully built-out naming-contest platform in this comparison. On April 17, 2024 it rebranded to Atom, at atom.com: same company, same core products, a shorter name that covers more than contests. If you’ve read an older Squadhelp review, most of it carries over, with one big exception for domain sellers: the ~35% commission cited in pre-2025 write-ups was replaced in early 2025 by three listing tiers — Standard at 7.5%, Plus at 15%, and a selective Premium tier sliding from 30% down to 15% as the sale price rises.
What does an Atom naming contest cost, and what do you get?
Four published tiers, where the differences matter more than the headline prices:
- Bronze, $299 — 300+ expected entries; a domain-availability check only (no real trademark check), matching .com checked.
- Gold, $449 — 600+ expected entries; an instant trademark check against one database (USPTO), comprehensive trademark research on the winning name, and an NDA/privacy option.
- Platinum, $749 — 1,000+ expected entries; trademark checks across four databases with research on your top three names, audience testing of your top six, linguistic analysis on three, and submissions restricted to Atom’s “Tier A” creatives.
- Managed, $1,499 — pairs a branding consultant with the crowdsourced process, including a professionally written creative brief.
Those list prices are Atom’s own; first-order promo codes discounting them are common, so the price actually paid is often lower.
It’s worth being clear where that money goes, because the gap between $299 and a few-dollar AI search looks absurd until you see it. Most of the fee is the award — the winning creative is paid from your contest budget, and the runners-up worked for nothing. You’re buying human labour, not software time: two different purchases, not two prices for the same thing. It also buys exclusivity — the winning name is original work assigned to you, where generator output, ours included, isn’t exclusive to whoever ran the search.
The trademark screening deserves emphasis, because no per-search AI generator does it: Gold and Platinum run real database checks plus human research on shortlisted names — materially better protection than checking domain availability. See trademark basics before you register for what such checks do and don’t cover. None of this — Atom’s screening included — is legal advice; clearing a trademark for real is a job for an attorney.
The honest caveats are structural: contests take days rather than minutes, sifting hundreds of mixed-quality entries is still your job, and only Platinum guarantees submissions from Atom’s vetted “Tier A” creatives.
What else does Atom sell besides contests?
The marketplace is the second pillar: 400,000+ curated brandable domains across Premium, Ultra Premium, and Sapphire (for modern extensions like .ai, .io and .xyz) — free to browse with no account, filterable by budget from under $2K to above $50K. Prices range from roughly $1,000–$2,000 at the low end into seven figures for ultra-premium one-word .coms, with a lease-to-own option on some domains. This is the category what is a premium domain defines — already-registered names no generator can offer. If the name you want is taken but unlisted, how to buy a taken domain covers that route.
Audience testing is real market research, not simulation: surveys of real human respondents with demographic targeting (age, gender, region, industry, income), results typically in 2–3 days, from $99 for 50 responses. An AI tool can guess how a name lands; this asks actual people. The DIY version is in how to test a name before committing.
The AI generator is genuinely free — unlimited, no signup — Atom’s top of funnel, competing head-on with the tools in our AI generator roundup.
What do Atom’s reviews actually say?
Atom holds roughly 4 to 4.5 out of 5 stars across review aggregators (Trustpilot, Capterra/SmartCustomer) as of mid-2026 — snapshots shift, so treat any precise score as a moment in time. It’s a mixed-positive record: most buyers get what their tier promised; a meaningful minority come away disappointed.
Satisfied buyers most often praise the volume of usable options and the hand-holding through transfer and escrow; Atom’s own marketing names Nestlé, Pepsi, Hilton and Philips among 100,000-plus customers. The complaints cluster where the structure predicts: a $299 Bronze contest draws a noisier pool than a Platinum one, and no tier removes the work of judging hundreds of subjective entries yourself. Neither a glowing five nor an angry one is the honest summary; four-ish is.
What are the best Atom alternatives?
Match the alternative to the job you’d hire Atom for.
For a curated premium domain: BrandBucket lists thousands of hand-curated brandable names. Novanym specializes in invented, portmanteau-style .com names; it has been part of BrandBucket since July 2025, so treat the two as one curation house with two storefronts rather than two independent opinions. Brandpa — acquired by HostPapa in June 2024, still operating — is a curated marketplace where sellers reportedly set minimum list prices around $1,000. Each curates a different taste of inventory, and taste is most of what you’re paying a curator for.
For human creativity: 99designs doesn’t sell naming on its own — it isn’t a category there, so buyers fold naming into a logo or brand-identity contest, commonly about $299 to $1,299 plus a platform fee. Worthwhile if you wanted both anyway. Fiverr swaps the crowd for one freelancer; naming gigs reportedly run $150–$800. And a professional naming agency is the escalation path, commonly five figures and up — how much naming a startup actually costs maps that whole spectrum.
For free ideation: Namelix generates invented brandable names for free, and Atom’s own generator is free too — and unlike most, it surfaces availability and marketplace matches as it goes. The trade-off most free tools share is the one free vs paid domain name generators unpacks: they optimize for volume, not verification.
Is Domain Yoga an Atom alternative?
Only for one slice of the job — and it’s our product, so hold this section to a higher bar. Domain Yoga is a different product from Atom: it sells no curated premium names, runs no contests, and employs no crowd. What it does is the ideation step — around 250 availability-checked, brandability-ranked ideas per search (the ranking is documented in our methodology), at $2–$5 per search with no subscription and credits that never expire. Human namers, vetted inventory, real survey respondents — that’s Atom’s territory, and Domain Yoga doesn’t pretend to it. If you want a large, checked, ranked shortlist before you spend hundreds on a contest, that’s ours.
So is Atom worth it — and which should you use?
| Option | What it is | Price | Reach for it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atom contests | Crowdsourced naming, four tiers | $299–$1,499 list | You want hundreds of exclusive human candidates, trademark-screened from Gold up |
| Atom marketplace | 400,000+ curated brandables | Roughly $1K–$2K low end, into seven figures | You want a short, already-registered .com, ready to buy |
| Atom audience testing | Real-human surveys | From $99 for 50 responses | You want actual market feedback within days |
| BrandBucket (incl. Novanym) / Brandpa | Curated marketplaces | Varies; Brandpa reportedly from ~$1,000 | You want a different curation taste than Atom’s |
| 99designs | Naming bundled with logo contests | About $299–$1,299 + platform fee (reported) | You need name and logo together |
| Fiverr | One-on-one freelance naming | Typically $150–$800 (reported) | You want a single namer, not a crowd |
| Namelix / Atom’s generator | Free AI generators | Free | Zero-budget brainstorming |
| Domain Yoga | Paid per-search AI generator | $2–$5 per search | You want ~250 checked, ranked ideas before spending hundreds |
The verdict is friendlier than most competitor-written reviews will admit. Atom is the most fully built-out crowdsourced naming offering here, with a 400,000-plus-name curated marketplace, real trademark screening, and real human testing behind its prices. Use it when the job needs humans — vetted inventory, survey respondents, a consultant on the phone. Use a free generator, or a few-dollar Domain Yoga search, while the job is still ideas. Whichever route you take, verify the domain and screen the trademark before you commit.
